If you have some time to do some knitting or sewing for a good cause please could you get in touch with Sandra Webb (Contact details at the end of this post). We met her on twitter and heard about the good work she is doing fundraising and collecting handmade donations for Bwaila Hospital in Lilongwe Malawi.
Sandra says that ‘helping one desperate mum makes it so worth it’
She has been sending knitting and baby clothing to this hospital in Malawi since 2013. Sandra does this because the mums there have nothing when their babies are born and she wanted this to change - so she and her daughter Kate set about changing it!
If you are able to knit, crochet or sew some items for Sandra to send to
Bwaila Hospital she would be ever so grateful. She is in need of knitted or sewn clothing (0-3 years), toys, teddies (this may be the first teddy for a lot of them ), blankets, hats, headbands (these are great to make with fabric remnants and are such a novelty out there. They love wearing them!) and more besides. Sandra says ‘these mums aren’t fussy as they have nothing to start with’ so whatever you are able to make will be gratefully received.
Sandra also sends parcels out to rural Ugandan children so would really appreciate it if any of you can sew some pillowcase dresses, skirts or shorts for her to send out to the children there. Plus - if you have any outgrown croc style shoes or sandals that you are able to send to her that would be great! She says that the children like them because they are light and cool to wear plus they can be washed. The bright colours also makes them a big hit!
In Sandra’s YouTube videos - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ndu4qtykXc - you can see photos of the children and babies wearing the knitted and sewn items that people have kindly made for them. As soon as they receive a parcel of items they try to send some photos over to her so that she can see what a huge impact her donations make to everyone.
It does cost a lot of money for these items all to to be posted out to Malawi and Uganda (approx (£12 per kilo)
so Sandra does various events to fund parcels plus she has a couple of gofundme pages set up so that she can raise funds to cover the cost of postage. You can view them here >>

This article explains how Sandra and her daughter Kate got started on their mission to send items out to those in need –> http://www.greatyarmouthmercury.co.uk/news/handmade-norfolk-knitwear-will-keep-babies-warm-in-africa-1-3238406 (please note the contact number in that article may no longer be correct however the email address is still current) and on the Malawi Maternal and Neonatal Health Facebook page they have made lots of references to the lovely donations that Sandra sends them regularly. There’s a screenshot below -
If you are able to offer your support by knitting and sewing then that would be fantastic. It is wonderful that Sandra and her daughter have started such an amazing project and it is something well worth getting involved in. Next week I am definitely going to start sewing some headbands and once I have made them I will post them to Sandra so she can send them to the little girls in Uganda and Malawi.

Here’s the progress so far on my daughter’s EPP quilt made from her outgrown clothing. This isn’t sewn together yet as I am waiting to finish all the hexie flowers before I decide where to place them all. I think it will be a few years until I am ready to start completing it …. I’ve been working on it for about 4 years already! 😃
