YoYo’s ARE BACK!
YoYo’s ARE BACK!
September 2009
Are you looking for something easy and fun to craft? When I was a teenager learning to sew, fabric YoYo’s were all the rage. I remember my grandmother making a quilt top with YoYo’s. Now I’m seeing YoYo’s again all over the internet. What a great way to use up scraps of fabric you have around, or even re-use that beautiful garment you’re not wearing anymore. Yoyo’s are a great hand-sewing project to take with you.
Here’s a Quick YoYo Tutorial:
Cut a circle about twice the size of your desired result. You can use anything around the house as a template, like a bowl or glass, or you can make one out of cardboard. An embroidery hoop might be just the trick. Trace around the edge with a fabric marker or tailors chalk. If you have a good pair of fabric scissors, pin several layers together in the center of each circle and cut them all at once.
With needle and thread, knot the end, leaving a 3 inch tail. With the wrong side of the fabric toward you, sew a running stitch around the edge, turning up a ¼ inch edge all the way around the circle.
When you get to where you started, pull the thread to gather the circle until it’s almost closed. Tie a knot with the 3 inch tail, trimming the threads close to the knot.
What can I make with my YoYo’s?
You can make toys and dolls, doilies and quilts, snowflakes, wreaths, headbands, embellishments, even high fashion … the list goes on. What ideas do you have for fabric YoYo’s?
