I Cannot Find The Right Button
I Cannot Find The Right Button
May 2010
It can be frustrating when your project is 95% done, but you just can’t seem to find the right finishing touch. Whether it’s buttons, belts, or trim, you can do it yourself, and get a perfect match or compliment to your garment.
Covered Buttons
Making your own covered buttons is a great solution when you can’t find buttons that suit you. You can use the same fabric, or a contrasting fabric. You can choose the perfect size. The package comes with instructions, or you can do an online search of “covered button pictures” and find a plethora of information and ideas. There is a detailed tutorial at Gertie’s New Blog for Better Sewing
Make your own Belt
If you are not having luck finding a belt to go with your new garment, you can easily make a fabric belt out of the matching fabric or a contrasting fabric. Again, you just need a buckle button, the length of fabric enough to go around your waist, plus added length to sew around the buckle and some for the seam allowance and the tail. Easy-peasy. If you want to make a stiffer belt, add some waistband lining or interfacing.
Why not make a great braided belt with leather thronging? Here’s a Youtube video that shows you how. You can use a great leather-effect button or a natural wood bead for a closure. A mother-of-pearl pendant would look great, too. Or, Make a Belt out of a Broken Guitar Strap. (It’s always a pleasure for me to see a young man sew)
