Measuring Tools And How To Use Them

July 2010

I do love my tools, I have to admit.  While it’s true that you can probably get by with just a measuring tape, there are many other measuring tools that make various tasks so much easier.  Most of them are a pittance in cost, so why not splurge?

• A Measuring Tape.  Absolutely necessary.  The retractable measuring tape is handy, but for large projects, I like my extra long heavy duty measuring tape.
• Measuring Gauge.  Very necessary.  I feel it’s indispensable for marking the hem.  It’s also perfect for a quick measure when your sewing has to be different widths, as in alterating.
• Designer Ruler.  Not a necessary tool, but if you’re doing alterations on patterns or minor design work, what a handy ruler.  For quilting, absolutely necessary.
• French Curve.  Absolutely necessary for pattern adjustment or making your own patterns or copying ready-made.  I love, love, love my French curve.
• See-through plastic rulers… Not really necessary, but oh so handy for altering patterns.  Also for straight rotary cutting.
• Quilting rulers.  Ask any quilter…Absolutely necessary.  I like them for other little craft projects, too.  If I’m making a card and want a small straight edge to score the fold… perfect.  If I want to trace a small straight line… perfect.  I like them for templates for just about any craft project.
What are your necessary measuring tools?
