Summer Sewing with Sheer Fabrics

Summer is the perfect time for sewing on some of those beautiful gauzy, sheer fabrics!  Beginners and even novice sewers can shy away from sheers because of their slippery reputation.  No need to fear, with a few simple techniques in hand, even the beginning sewer need not be intimidated by those beautiful slippery sheers.

Best Tips for Sheers

·         Choose simple patterns with minimal details for sheer fabrics.  Sheers drape beautifully, and are flattering to everyone.  There is no need to have a garment full of difficult details.  Remember, when you are choosing a pattern that everything shows through with a sheer:  darts, seams, and lining.  It’s best to keep it simple.

·         A temporary spray-on adhesive will keep the fabric from slipping under the pattern.

·         Transfer markings with a removable marker, after doing a test on a scrap.

·         Make sure you use sharp, quality sheers to cut the fabric.

·         To prevent puckering, hold the fabric securely at the front and the back of the piece you are sewing, being careful not to stretch.  Patience is a necessity.

·         Use water-soluble stabilizer to prevent slipping and puckering.  Use on a test scrap first.

·         Use narrow serged seams, since they will show through.  With patience, French seams can be mastered and look fabulous with sheers.  It’s really not difficult, you’re just sewing twice, and you must remember to start with the wrong sides together.

·         Be sure to start with a new needle, in the correct small size, to keep from getting runs or picks.

Most of all take your time and enjoy the process.  With a little patience, you will have a beautiful sheer garment to show off your fine taste and skill this summer!
