Fusible Stabiliser: A Necessary Sewing Supply
Fusible Stabiliser: A Necessary Sewing Supply
August 2009
There are so many things a sewer can do with fusible web or stabilizer, apart from the original intent of the product. Having some in your sewing box is a great idea.
Preserve a favorite pattern: If you have a pattern that you use over and over again, eventually it will become tattered and unusable. Why not preserve it with fusible stabiliser? Remove the paper backing and lay it on the ironing board with the fusible side up. Lay out your pattern, cover it with the backing paper, and press. It’s that easy. (Be sure to save the backing paper, it makes a handy pressing cloth for many applications, like appliqués and iron-on patches.)
Beginning and end of seams: Sometimes the beginnings and ends of the seams can get dragged down into the presser plate of your machine, making a frayed mess. Use your scraps of fusible stabilizer to slightly layer at the start and end of your seams, then just gently rip it off when you’re done. I save every scrap in a cute little tin.
Other uses for fusible web scraps:
· Use fusible web to reinforce buttonholes and buttons.
· When a straight corner seam is important, measure out and cut a straight corner of fusible web and iron it on first. Then sew along the edge. You’ll have a perfect corner. This technique will work for a curve too.
· Use scraps of fusible web to reinforce stress points, like tie attachments or pocket top edges.
· Iron on scraps of fusible stabilizer at turning points where facing is sewn on to edges to make a sharp corner and reduce bulk.
· Use for quick hem repairs.
