Make That Dress Yourself

April 2010

7 April 2010 - Jo Williams

My young friend Devin was perusing her favorite online clothing store when she found her dream dress!  It was the style, the color, the right amount of girlyness, but not too much.  Only one thing was too much… the price.  An $80 dress is just way out of reach for a college student.  (To tell you the truth, its way out of reach for many of us!)

Make that Dress Yourself!

She came to me and we put our heads together.  We decided we could make it for much less, so off we went to the fabric shop.  You might think the rest of the story includes finding the perfect fabric, the right pattern, and sitting down for a weekend and producing a glorious copy of the original, right?  Well, not exactly.

We couldn’t find a fabric that would do, or a pattern either.  So like so many young people who are imaginative, creative and industrious… she took me to the thrift shop.

Here we found a knit sweater and a voluminous dress.  We cut the skirt off the dress and sewed it on the sweater.  Quality scissors make a project so much easier.  With some purchased ribbon , quality sewing thread, and buttons…Voila!  These pictures show the project:

Imagination, industriousness, and creativity.  Add to that thriftyness, and $13.57.  That’s what it took to recreate this beautiful $80 internet dress!
